Blake Holgate is one special person! As you are reading this blog, you may wonder who is Blake Holgate! Blake? Well he is one of those special people who absolutely amaze me by their kindness. Both this blog and my email were set up by Blake. My wireless network in my home, though not set up by Blake, would have never happened without his knowledge and help. And then several times, his positive outlook has helped me through the work day. On top of all that, he deeply loves his family. His commitment to his parents, wife, and children are evident with only a few minutes conversation. But this posting is more than just to say thank you to Blake and tell the world of his amazing attributes. It is another example of the wonderful character traits that accompany those who give of themselves. As I was reading over the last post and the example of Dr. Barnard's husband, several people came to mind. Of all the people who serve as examples, the existence of this post was directly the result of the giving of Blake. And with Blake, as with all who give freely of themselves, his character traits and personality attributes are exemplary. What amazes me is the sheer number of "Blakes" who I know. And through Blake, I will have the privilege over time to introduce the world to many of them through this blog. And maybe someday you too can experience the privilege of meeting Blake Holgate!

Success is Free - Try Giving Yourself Away
WOW! Many thanks to Emma Lindquist and Kristen Shelite who invited me to speak at the Four States Regional Technology Conference! They gave me an audience for something I have never got to speak about before in my life, but believe in deeply. When I was a teenager I read "Try Giving Yourself Away." The premise of the book is that simple acts of kindness impacts the giver dramatically. Throughout my life, I have found this to be true. In the act of doing something for another, the giver becomes more energetic, positive, and creative. It is important the giving is not from selfish motives, but a free gift neither expecting nor even desiring a return. But it has been very fun when many times I have been honored by meeting like minded givers who have greatly enriched my life. Even a greater honor is to see my daughter Hannah Keener, who is a student at Pittsburg State University, live her life in service to others. Giving is such a fun path that the resulting rewards seem almost secondary. I was honored that professor Dr. Joni Barnard was in the session. She spoke with me afterwards and showed an interest in the book, "Try Giving Yourself Away". It was my privilege to have an extra copy of the book for her. She then told me of her husband. It seems that he is a very giving person. For example, when walking along and a piece of trash is in the path, it is his normal habit to pick it up. Dr. Barnard said she would sometimes point out that such trash is infested with germs. Then Dr. Barnard allowed me to ask about the character and attributes of her husband. He is well known for his positive attitude and great energy! So, this wonderful opportunity was a lot of fun. Associating with such wonderful people was a great privilege. And to top it off by talking about such an important subject made it even more so.

Recognition - It's not magic but it works like magic
Friday, November 2, 2007
Thanks for a reminder of the magic of recognition and it seems that I need to be reminded often. Even the title of this blog is a quote from a very good friend. Another friend reminded me that it is easy to step up recognition by involvement of other people when possible. We discussed many different ways of recognition and what was most effective. Here is brief outline of our conversation about taking recognition one level higher. A person does a good job and you let them know by:
  1. Telling them thanks.
  2. Sending a thank you email
  3. Giving them a handwritten thank you even if it is on a post-it note
  4. Saying thanks to them but send an email to their boss
  5. Asking their boss to tell them thanks

So, I acted on the conversation and it is so much fun to see how well it worked.

We had three wonderful people who did a fabulous job on the United Way campaign. They are just plum good at these things and bring a contagious fresh enthusiasm to the worthy cause. Consequently, we had the best participation and highest amount raised for United Way. I was so proud of them and extremely thankful. What they did deserved more than a simple pat on the back or a quick "thanks".

So, I asked the owner of the company to thank them which he did via email.

It was fun as I just sat back and watched. The owner did a fabulous job. The volunteers responded to the owner with very complimentary emails. The owner felt great after reading their responses. Those who had done the hard work got recognition from the very top which they well deserved.

Oh yeah, I did get caught and the volunteers said they knew I started the whole thing. But what the heck, it still was fun.

Sometimes I just need the reminder of good friends about how important it is to take it one step further.

Now it is your turn to tell others of how well this works!

We all need reminders and success stories.
